Through the creation of the Social Security system and related programs, Roosevelt vastly expanded the scope and size of the federal government and created the political world in which we live. He pushed subsidies for farmers, changed the banking system, and created the National Recovery Administration, which regulated many aspects of business until it was declared unconstitutional in 1935. Once in office, he began radically transforming the federal government while seeking to ameliorate the nation's woes. When accepting the Democratic Party's presidential nomination in 1932, Roosevelt proclaimed 'a new deal' for the American people. First under the misguided and generally ineffective policies of President Herbert Hoover and later under those of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the federal government became increasingly interventionist, at times attempting to dictate all aspects of economic production. entry into World War II, the country's economy floundered tragically, with the unemployment rate typically in the high teens. From the stock market crash of 1929 through U.S. A couple of years later in 1929, Stalin started a reign of terror and set up concentration camps later known as Gulag, where Russian workers were sent.With the possible exception of the Civil War, no event has transformed American politics more fully than the Great Depression. After coming back from the Soviet union the labor advocates raced each others to write volumes about the trip which provided a unique experience for them and provided a unique insight about communism and Stalin. Eventually they met Stalin and conversed about the ethnic diversity of this country and communism. The men saw the various projects that the Soviets were building and received tours of the 'Bolshevik paradise'. Once they arrived there they met Stalin, who wanted to negotiated terms with them, asking for aid to help the dire state that the soviet economy was in. Meeting up with another man in England, Paul Douglass, the men were on their way to the Soviet Union. Aboard the ship were Professor R.G Tugwell, Brebner, Stuart Chase, Schlink, and others. On July 1927 the steamship President Roosevelt left the ports of New York for England.
